Sakai Junior High School English Speech Contest
In an effort to raise awareness of sister city activities, as well as to promote English language education, the first Sakai Junior High School English Recitation Contest was held in 1979, based on designs by Kenzo Yamaji, Honorary President of the Association(a director at the time).
In those days contestants would have 3 minutes to demonstrate the results of their practicing, and gave very rousing speeches. Also, from the 24th contest in 2002 and onwards, an additional “set-topic speech” category was supplemented to the traditional “free-topic” category, which was aimed at first-year students, and made the contest even more lively.
These days the Speech contest is held each year on the last Wednesday of October, and thanks to the schools, the many supporters, and of course the students themselves, has continued for 33 years.
2012 will be the 34th time the contest will be held, and we hope that with your support the English Speech Contest can continue to help students succeed, even just a little bit. Please do get involved!
